The following post is by Don Munro, one of our marketing folks here at ACTIVE Network — who keeps up with meetings & event industry news:

There’s a deep freeze outside in much of the nation, but signs of spring (and recovery) for the meetings industry abound. Is it just me, or have you also been noticing a spate of good news about meetings and events? Here’s what I mean:

  • Event Spend Heading North: The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) predicted that U.S. business travel spending will grow 6.6%, to $290 billion this year – nearly double the increase in 2013. After two years of decline, meetings group spend will grow in 2014 by 6.5%. Check out the full forecast inBusiness Travel News.

  • What’s Good for Events is Good for Hotels. According to hotel consultancy STR, in the fourth quarter of 2013, U.S. hotels saw: 3.3% year-over-year growth in average daily rates; a 5.1% rise in revenue per available (RevPar) room; an occupancy increase of 1.8% (the strongest of any quarter last year).  Read more good news about hotelshere.

  • Events Are Good For us All. A coalition of meetings-industry leaders, including the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and the U.S. Travel Association, relaunched “Meetings Mean Business,” a national campaign first created in 2009 to highlight the value derived from events. For example, did you know that the events and meetings industry creates hundreds of thousands of jobs, generates billions of dollars of revenue and supports communities across the country?  More on the new campaign.

What do you think has been the most interesting recent trend or news item affecting the meetings industry? Please share here.
