Epidemic to Pandemic in 24 Hours – How The Zika Outbreak Affects Business Travel

The outbreak of Zika in the United States has struck a nerve in the business travel community – recent reports suggest that, in addition to being spread by mosquitoes, Zika can also be transmitted sexually.

The media stories about Zika originated as a regionally contained virus that had adverse consequences for pregnant women. There was a notion of Oh, that’s remotely located, it won’t affect us in the United States – however, that thinking is devastatingly wrong.

The Zika virus is problematic because the regional outbreak is literally just a plane ride away from the United States. The main carriers for the disease are mosquitoes. Air travel has enabled disease outbreaks to quickly spread from their remote geographic regions to other parts of the world. Remember SARS? Or, more recently, Ebola?

In the United States, there have been zero reports (thus far) of Zika being transmitted locally. However, there are several cases of Zika reported in travelers returning to the U.S. from affected areas – in Oahu, Hawaii, a mother and child were affected.

What does this mean for business travel?

Meeting and conference planners need to strategize a new duty of care policy, concerning implications for attendees who are traveling to these regions to attend events – and the possible ramifications of attendees bringing this virus back home with them.

If you haven’t started thinking about how this latest outbreak may adversely impact your meeting, event or standard business travel, you need to. Unfortunately, the timing for this outbreak means attendance at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Brazil will most definitely be impacted.

If you’re traveling to one of the affected regions soon, be sure to check out online updates on this issue! I recommend: The Centers for Disease Control and The Business Travel Coalition.

Safe travels!
