The Trouble with Rate Squatting

When hotels display negotiated or consortia rates that haven’t been accepted into a corporation’s prefered hotel program — otherwise known as “rate squatting” —  it can be confusing to corporate travelers and reduces volume to prefered hotels.
The results are problematic for both corporate travel buyers, as well as the hotels they do business with. By siphoning travelers away from preferred hotels, squatters make it harder for travel buyers to leverage their purchasing power in negotiations. For hoteliers, having squatters in their chain can incur penalties from their corporate partners.

Reverse Audit to the Rescue

Part of our Rate Integrity module, the reverse audit feature provides tools that allow both corporate travel buyers and hotels to search for rate squatters, identify offending properties, and open a dialogue with those properties to resolve compliance issues quickly and conveniently.

For travel buyers, that means reducing confusion for your travelers — preventing dilution of room nights at your preferred hotels and ensuring your negotiating power in the future.

For hotels, that means identifying offending properties within your chain that could be hurting your relationships with corporate buyers — and in some cases, helps you avoid penalties imposed by your corporate customers for “squatter” hotels.

Reverse audit enables you to:
  • Ensure program compliance by detecting unauthorized hotels. Search for rate squatters either in your hotel chain or against your corporation’s preferred list.
  • Easily track hotel programs with detailed reporting. Provides you with a report identifying offending hotels, any errors (such as invalid rate access codes), and the hotel contact information for follow-up.
  • Resolve issues faster with integrated email notifications. Customize and generate email notifications to offending hotels for faster resolution. Lanyon tracks all notifications sent for future reference.
